DevOps Engineer

CivicActions is a dedicated, fun-loving team, looking for some talented folks to help us bring revolutionary digital services to government agencies and the people they serve.

For this position, we need people with experience in: 

  • Continuous integration 
  • Continuous deployment 
  • Automated testing
  • Scripting of server configuration 
  • Repeatable process automation in an agile environment

As DevOps engineer, you will also provide system administration support, write scripts, automate common tasks, configure firewall rules and policies as well as create and maintain documentation of system and network architecture, operating systems and devices. You will also assist in deploying and configuring new servers and software packages, making recommendations and providing user support.

The current opening for this position requires on-site interactions with clients and users in Sacramento, California; therefore we are seeking candidates who reside in Sacramento or are willing to commute on a daily or weekly basis.

We also like to see a track record of contributions to open community projects.

For this position, at least 3 years full-time experience with general software development and design in an agile environment is required.

A minimum of 2 years full-time experience in all of the following is required:

  • Providing DevOps services (on at least 2 distinct projects) in an agile environment
  • DevOps in a cloud environment

A minimum of 2 years full-time experience with at least one of the following (ideally more) is required:

  • Analyzing and baselining configurable items with Linux/UNIX based systems
  • Monitoring and fine tuning performance of Linux/UNIX based systems by reviewing performance and system logs and resolving issues
  • Modeling and baselining database configuration
  • Network administration
  • Maintaining system logs, hardware/software licenses, and agreements

A minimum of 1 year full-time experience with all of the following is required:

  • Server configuration scripting (e.g. Shell scripting)
  • Configuration management tools (e.g., Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Salt)
  • Continuous monitoring tools (e.g., Datadog, Nagios, Zabbix, Sensu, Prometheus, SysDig, New Relic)
  • Working on project(s) employing continuous integration and using CI tools (e.g., Jenkins, Travis CI, Gitlab CI)
  • Working on project(s) employing continuous deployment and using CD tools (e.g., LXC, Docker, Rocket, Terraform)

A computer science, engineering, or technology-related baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, or commensurate experience is also required.

  • Strength in DevOps for Linux hosted Java and Ruby on Rails environments
  • Quickly researching and learning new programming tools and techniques
  • Writing and working with open source solutions and community
  • Authoring developer-friendly documentation (e.g., API documentation, deployment operations)
  • Providing operating system administration support
  • Complementary/specialized skills such as coding and debugging are also a plus
  • Intense curiosity about people and human interactions
  • Ability to appreciate and communicate with both introverts and extroverts
  • Desire to become an extraordinary communicator by searching inside yourself
  • Ability to see patterns and identify unstated needs
