UX / Visual Designer

As a UX / Visual Designer at CivicActions, you will collaborate across disciplines in a radically open environment to develop delightful web apps for large federal and state government agencies, and the people they serve.

You will lead the UX and Visual Design components of collaborative discovery, prototyping and development workflows. You will plan and execute discovery sprints, including 1) organizational research of stakeholders, business needs and agency culture, and 2) user research that incorporates an understanding of the rich diversity within government audiences. You will synthesise your learnings into design deliverables that form the basis of a lean / agile prototyping and development workflow. You will be responsible for ensuring tight feedback loops between development and design and end users, such that the team is rapidly learning, iterating, and delivering products with the highest value to the users.  

Experience

You are well-versed in all aspects of current visual design standards and trends and will be responsible for managing project design reviews, resource planning, and execution for all visual project work. A minimum of five years visual design and at least two years Agile experience is required. The current position is a remote work position, but some travel to client locations will be required. U.S. citizenship is required for this position.

We're also looking for candidates with the following experience:

  • You're familiar with human-centered design and design research is an integral part of your creative process.
  • You have an ability to clearly articulate design decisions & the problems they are solving with excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.
  • You can demonstrate experience with an iterative design process: incorporating feedback, launching quickly and testing hypotheses.
  • You have a strong understanding of component-based product design or UI patterns and style guides, and the role they play in prototyping and collaborating with developers.
  • You have demonstrated expertise in the collaborative design and prototyping software and tools including: Sketch, Invision, Figma, and some HTML/CSS/JS, etc.
  • You have a portfolio that demonstrates ability to design compelling visual experiences and user interfaces around business, user, and technology requirements.
  • You have experience working with data visualization and data-driven storytelling through design.
  • You are excited about contributing to and building on our existing UX practices.

Desired Skill Set

  • Intense curiosity about people and human interactions
  • Ability to appreciate and communicate with both introverts and extroverts
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in software, web and/or mobile visual design
  • In depth knowledge of Agile and/or Lean practices with at least 2 years experience
  • Ability to see patterns and identify unstated needs
  • Experience with GitHub, Trello, Slack are a plus

Location

Our team is almost entirely distributed (remote) across more than a dozen states. For this position, you can normally work from home or find a great co-working space, although occasional on-site visits and working sessions with clients will be necessary. You will need a computer, webcam, strong internet connection and a structured schedule because we are a truly collaborative team. Ideally your timezone will be within the continental United States.
